The News Reporter is responsible for researching, investigating, writing, and presenting news stories for print, broadcast, or online media. The role involves gathering accurate and timely information, interviewing sources, and delivering stories that inform and engage the public.

Responsibilities
  • News Gathering:
    Identifying and reporting on important and timely events or developments that are of interest to the public. Write clear, accurate, and engaging news reports for publication or broadcast.

  • Research & Investigation:
    Conducting thorough research to gather facts, statistics, and background information for stories. Research, investigate, and develop news stories from assigned beats or breaking news events.

  • Storytelling:
    Writing and editing scripts, articles, or reports, and adapting them for different media (print, broadcast, digital). Present news stories on television, radio, or digital platforms in a professional manner.

  • Interviewing:
    Conducting interviews with various individuals to gather different perspectives and information for a story. Conduct interviews with eyewitnesses, experts, and relevant stakeholders.

  • Accuracy & Objectivity:
    Upholding ethical journalistic standards by ensuring accuracy, truthfulness, and objectivity in their reporting. 

  • Adaptability:
    Being able to cover a wide range of topics and adapt to different situations, often requiring flexible working hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. 

  • Verify facts and cross-check information to ensure credibility.

  • Stay updated on current events, local, national, and international issues.

  • Collaborate with editors, producers, and other newsroom staff to develop content.

  • Meet strict deadlines and adapt quickly to changing news situations.

  • Uphold journalistic ethics, objectivity, and fairness in reporting.

Qualifications
  • Education:
    A Certificate or Diploma in Journalism, Communications, or a related field is generally required, though some specialized roles may benefit from a bachelor's degree. 

  • Skills:

    • Writing and Editing: The ability to craft clear, concise, and compelling narratives for different media formats. 
    • Research and Fact-Checking: A strong capacity for in-depth research, verifying information, and investigating leads. 
    • Communication: Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills for conducting interviews and clearly articulating complex information. 
    • Critical Thinking: The ability to analyze information, identify newsworthy angles, and think creatively to uncover stories. 
    • Time Management: Proficiency in working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines in a fast-paced news environment. 
    • Digital Media Literacy: Familiarity with social platforms and digital tools for news dissemination and audience engagement.
